Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, on behalf of the Lib-Dems in Broxtowe. May I give a special welcome to the new readers that we have this week. Well, what a couple of weeks we have had. The election two weeks ago produced a result no-one expected and since then so much seems to have happened. The horror of Grenfell Court will resonate for many years. Nevertheless I hope that people were as inspired as I was by the huge response of the public to help. This sort of tragedy really can bring out the very best in people.
After all the politics of the last few weeks I have decided to concentrate this week on events and leave any political comment for the future.
This years Beeston Carnival will take place on Saturday 8th July. Events begin at 12.30 in Beeston Square and then from 2pm in Broadgate Park. This is always a very well attended event with a wide range of displays and attractions. If you haven’t been before I would strongly recommend it.
William Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night will be performed on Friday 21st July 2017 at 7:30pm, at Colliers Wood, Engine Lane, Moorgreen, Nottingham, NG16 3QU. Tickets cost £15.00 adults, (£12.00 concessions) with Children under 16 free. The grounds open at 6:30pm. Seating will be provided. Thank you to the thousands of people who attended Bramcote Park on 10th June to make the annual Hemlock Happening such a success. The weather played its part and people seemed to have a really good time. The event almost didn’t happen however. On the Thursday before I was driving down Coventry Lane and saw that a large group of travellers had moved into the park. If they had still been there on Saturday it would have been impossible for the Hemlock Happening to go ahead. I immediately phoned Stan Heptinstall, who chairs the steering group, and then the Chief Executive of the council. Even though it was election day she was able to put steps into place immediately to ensure that the travellers could be lawfully moved off the park before everyone needed to set up. I’d like to thank everyone who worked so hard to achieve this.
I’m pleased to say that the plans for Bramcote Park Café have now been received from the architect. These can be viewed on our website at www.bramcoteparkcafe.uk. They were displayed at the Hemlock Happening and also at the Bramcote School celebration day. Everyone who has commented has been really enthusiastic. We will also be launching some new fundraising initiatives in the next few days so please do drop by and visit the website.
Plans submitted to the borough council to modernise and improve the appearance of Beeston Hindu Temple in Beeston Rylands have been approved by the Borough Council this week. Work can now begin any time in the next three years.
On Saturday 1st July the annual Broxtowe Community Fun Day will be held. This is a day to celebrate many different cultures in Broxtowe through music, dance, sport and arts. Activities include Indian Drumming, Chinese Lion Dance, Community Performances, Henna, Arts & Crafts, a number of information stalls on local services, food tasting from around the world, and much, much more. Also on 1st July will be the annual Oxjam Concert. Over the years this has become an important fund raiser for Oxfam and I hope that this years event will be as well supported as usual.

On 2nd July a Silent Auction will be held to raise funds for 1st Nuthall Scout group. This is a fun social family event where people bid on paper and mingle over a drink during the auction time. Entry tickets cost £5 per adult which includes refreshments and the chance to sell items in the auction. This amazing summer clubs will give 5-11 year olds the opportunity to beat the summertime boredom with a series of creative challenges and activities. You’ll make and create something everyday. There’ll be super-construction, engineering challenges, thought provoking games, amazing number tricks, mini performances and competitions. On Saturday 24th June at Beeston Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, Beeston, between 10.00 am – 3.00 pm members of the local Spotted Dog Art Group will be selling paintings, photographs, art books, cards etc. for a charity of their choice. This is a great chance to buy original art at a good price and to support a charity as well. Tea and coffee available.
This is one that I meant to report a few weeks ago but then lost my note. Congratulations to the William Lilley School in Stapleford for recently retaining its “Good” rating from Ofsted. Well done to the pupils and staff for this and many apologies for the delay in mentioning it.
