Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, on behalf of the Lib-Dems in Broxtowe. May I give a special welcome to the new readers that we have this week. This is quite a short newsletter this week but there is some important material to cover. May I start by paying tribute to the emergency services for their response to the terrorist attack in London on Saturday night. I was just starting to prepare the newsletter when the reports started to appear on the media and so I decided to postpone this weeks edition until today. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been hurt or killed and also with their friends and family.

 

1. General Election

Just in case you haven’t noticed, this Thursday is the general election. I really believe that it is the most important election in our lifetimes, and I would urge you to vote for Tim Hallam for Broxtowe. As Lib Dems we are of course the only people who will offer you a say on the terms of Brexit, but there is much more to us than that. We are committed to properly funding the NHS and will stick a penny on income tax to do this. We will also put money into education to ensure that all schools can offer good quality education rather than waste it on grammar schools and free schools. The evidence is that these do not improve the quality of education for the majority of children and we want to be fair for all, not just the richest 20%. We are also committed to making sure that we have a green and environmentally friendly country. We oppose the dementia tax, fox hunting and scrapping free school dinners for children. (The Conservatives suggestion that they will provide a breakfast instead, at the cost of 6p per meal, is not an appropriate replacement for this.)

 

2. Hemlock Happening

What better way to get over the general election than to attend the Hemlock Happening on Saturday at Bramcote Hills Park. There is a packed programme of activities and full details can be found at http://www.hemlockhappening.org/. I will be on the Bramcote Park Café stall, where we will be showing the plans for the café design.

 

3. Charity Art Sale

On Saturday 24th June at Beeston Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, Beeston, between  10.00 am – 3.00 pm members of the local Spotted Dog Art Group will be selling paintings, photographs, art books, cards etc. for a charity of their choice.  This is a great chance to buy original art at a good price and to support a charity as well.  Tea and coffee available.

 

4. Stapleford Post Office

The Post Office have launched a 6 week public consultation to hear what the local residents and businesses think about the suitability of the proposed new branch location for Stapleford Town Centre.  Locals are invited to offer feedback on the proposed new location at Sean’s Shop, 66A Derby Road, Stapleford, Nottingham, NG9 7AB. You can share your views on the proposed move through the online questionnaire at https://www.postofficeviews.co.uk/liveconsultation.php.  When entering the site you will be asked to enter the code for this branch: 32722799

 

5. DH Lawrence Museum

As readers may recall the Tories running Broxtowe Borough Council closed the Durban House Museum in Eastwood last year. They have now announced that they are intending to sell off many of the items that were housed in the museums archives. Whilst they have described this as “rationalisation” the reality is that it is cultural vandalism. I am also surprised that they have announced this in the middle of a general election campaign.

 

6. Trent Vale Infant School

Last year Trent Vale Infant and Nursery School was rated by Ofsted as requiring improvement. Ofsted have now been back for a monitoring visit and have noted that the school have put steps in place to improve and that these measures are being implemented. This will be good news for all parents, and I offer y encouragement to the staff and governors to keep on with the progress.

 

7. Data Protection Breach

Nottinghamshire County Council have found themselves in hot water after accidentally revealing hundreds of private email addresses. They sent an email to everyone who had submitted comments about their minerals plan, but all the emails were visible to everyone else. This is now being considered by the Information Commissioners office, who will decide whether any action is needed.

 

8. Notts TV

As a final comment on the general election, I will be representing the Liberal Democrats on the post election review on Notts TV on Friday 9^th June. You can find this on Freeview or Sky, and I hope many people will tune in.
