There is something different about this election. I’ve stood in a number of parliamentary elections and never before have the police felt the need to send advice to candidates about their personal and online safety. I have already had a number of comments made on my Facebook page threatening me with serious physical violence or being extremely abusive. This isn’t the way that it should be. Surely we should be able to debate and discuss matters with one another, even when we disagree, without resorting to abuse or violence? We really do need to change the whole tone of this debate and of the way that we do politics in this country.
