Brexit – The Fight Goes On

by David Watts on 21 October, 2019

The battle against Boris Johnsons disastrous Brexit deal rumbles on. On Saturday, as more than a million people marched to call for a peoples vote, MP’s defeated the governments plans to railroad this deal through, and so they should. Johnsons deal is nothing more than no deal Brexit by the back door and not something that any right minded MP should be voting for. Just because this is “a deal” does not mean that it is a good deal and it most certainly is not. It will make people poorer and no MP should willingly vote for this to happen to their constituents.

The Governments response was to carry on with more bluster, this time trying to force a second vote on the same bill. The irony of this should not be lost on people. The government turn a deaf ear to millions calling for a peoples vote but expect to force MP’s into a second vote on their plans. Thankfully John Bercow, the speaker of the House of Commons, wouldn’t let them, as it quite clearly breached the rules on debate in parliament. Once a decision is made you cannot have another vote on the same motion in the same sitting of parliament.
