Shortly before sitting down to write this week’s enews I heard reports of a tragic accident in Stapleford, in which a teenage boy fell into the River Erewash and drowned. May I offer my deepest sympathy and those of my colleagues to everyone affected by this, and especially of course to his family.

1. Health Spotlight
People living across Broxtowe are invited to find out more about their local health services at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NHS Nottingham West Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). It is taking place on Thursday 29 September, 6-8pm, at The Haven Centre, Wadsworth Road, Stapleford, NG9 8BD. The CCG is the clinically-led organisation responsible for planning and funding health services for 94,000 people living across the area. A health marketplace will begin at 6pm when guests will be able to talk to experts from partner organisations such as the Carers Federation, Healthwatch Nottinghamshire and British Red Cross. This will be followed by the AGM which will start at 6.30pm when the CCG’s Annual Report and Accounts for 2015/16 will be presented. The public will also have the opportunity to ask questions to members of the Governing Body, which includes local GPs. Light refreshments will be available. 2. Right of Way Closure, Moss Drive, Bramcote
The Bramcote Conservation Society has formally objected to the closure of a claimed Right of Way on Moss Drive, Bramcote. The Chairman, Rob Greer, delivered over 100 completed claims to the Right of Way to the chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Planning Committee at a specially arranged meeting at County Hall. This starts the process of consideration of the claims that will lead to a public enquiry on the possibility of re-stablishing a route that has been used for many years as a means of access to the woods and paths beyond Moss Drive. The situation has arisen as a consequence of the owners of the land closing the access. The owners believe they have the right to close the access, and have done so to put pressure on Broxtowe Borough Council to grant planning permission for a housing development. An application for such was turned down by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Planning Committee. The land is in the green belt and protected from development under current policies. This will not prevent the owners putting in further applications for development. The Lib Dems believe that Broxtowe Borough Council made the right decision to turn down the planning application and that the subsequent closure of the route by the owners cannot be justified. The evidence regarding long term use is overwhelming and the route should be reopened as soon as possible.

3. Long Term Unemployment
Figures released this week showed that 7.9% of jobseekers in Broxtowe have been out of work for more than five years. This compares to 8.2% for the city, 7.2% for Ashfield, 7.9% in Rushcliffe and 5.7% in Gedling. In terms of overall numbers the figures are quite small, but every one is a personal tragedy and reinforces my desire to work towards full employment.

4. Beeston Cycle Centre Guided Ride
Free guided rides for Broxtowe residents take place every Wednesday between 10 am and 1pm meeting at Hetley Pearson Recreation Ground Pavilion, with the next ride taking place on 28th September. The project is funded by Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with Ridewise.

5. Age With Independence
On Wednesday 28th September at the Village Hotel, Chilwell Retail Park, Brailsford Way,Nottingham commencing at 1.00pm there is a free event for older people with their friends, relatives, carers and supporters, who want to find out more about healthy living and help available. Those groups attending include Macmillan Cancer, Parkinsons UK, The Police, Fire Service, NHS, Broxtowe BC, Alzheimer’s, Age UK, CAB, Mental Health, Carers Federation, Forces in the Community, Cruse Bereavement, Arthritis, National Osteoporosdis and others. Mayor of Broxtowe is opening the event at 1.30 pm Come along and meet the specialists and have a cup of tea with us afterwards. The event is organised by Chilwell Valley and Meadows Surgeries through the support of Broxtowe BC and NHS Nottingham West.

6. Stapleford Combined Services Table Top Sale
People can rent a table for £5.00 to use as a stall to sell their second hand goods/homemade crafts etc. This is then open to the public to come and browse and buy. The event opens from 9.00am for setting up and is then open to public from 10.00am until 12.00am. It takes place at The Stapleford and Sandicare Conservative Club, Derby Road, Stapleford.

7. Stapleford Baptist Church Open Day
Stapleford Baptist Church, Albert Street , NG9 8DB, will be holding an open day on 8th October between 10.30am and 3.30pm. Refreshments will be available through the day and there will be displays showing the work of the church in the past and the present.

8. Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning
On 30th September the annual fundraising coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Relief will take place across the country. There will be a venue at the Middle Street Resource Centre, Middle Street, Beeston, between 10 and 12.00.

9. Beeston Arts and Crafts Fair
This will take place on Friday 7th – Saturday 8th October between 10.30am and 4.30pm in The Square, Beeston Town Centre. NG9 2AN. There will be a range of different stalls and everyone is welcome to attend.

10. Healthy Children
A report published this week has concluded that only 19% of children in the East Midlands take part in daily exercise. This is a great shame as there are lots of good sports clubs around, offering every type of sport at every possible level. I would encourage all parents to try and get their children involved in sport (I spend significant amounts of my time ferrying my kids from activity to activity, which is one of the great privileges one has as a parent.)

11. New Pet Store
The national pet store chain Pets at Home, who already had a store in Giltbrook, have opened a new store at Chilwell Retail Park. This is one of 20 stores that they are opening this year and creates 19 new jobs.

12. Neville Sadler Court
Neville Sadler Court, the former old peoples home that was closed and partially demolished to make way for the tram in Beeston, is to be sold off by the city council. The expectation is that the rest of the site will be demolished and a new housing development created instead.

13. Railway Work
Due to engineering work trains between Nottingham and London will not stop at Beeston on Sunday 2nd October and a replacement bus service will operate. A full service should be running from Monday morning.

14. Labour and the Liberal Democrats
Today has been a very busy day for the membership team at the Liberal Democrats. Across the country 3,000 people joined our party in the 8 hours after Jeremy Corbyn was re-elected as the leader of the Labour Party. I assume that the vast majority of our new members today were previously moderate members of the Labour Party. The new members include a significant number here in Broxtowe.
